Blue pottery or Kashi Kari is a centuries old craft which originated from Kashghar in China. It is one of the most esteemed crafts of Pakistan and consists of hand painting ceramic products in ethereal shades of blue and turquoise. It is in danger of being extinguished, however, artisans like Ustad Alam, have kept this art alive through their commendable talent and determination. Ustad Alam belonged to the city of Multan and was a legend in the world of blue pottery. He started learning this craft over fifty years ago and started work in the 70’s. He established an institute for the propagation of this craft and trained over five hundred students. He was awarded a Pride of Performance in recognition of his efforts, and was also the recipient of a life time achievement award from the city district Government of Multan and awards from UNESCO, India. Ustad Alam passed away in 2018, however, his work is continued by his sons.
